This is the second time that the downtown Durham school has been so recognized.  The first was in 2007.   In addition to a rigorous academic program, the school offers advanced arts courses in band, chorus, piano, strings, guitar, art, sculpture, photography, dance, theater, and creative writing.

The Magnet Schools of America’s mission is to provide leadership for innovative instructional programs that promote equity, diversity and academic excellence for all students in public school choice programs. 

Awards were based on a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts and the consistent delivery of quality services to all school stakeholders.  DSA will be honored at the Magnet Schools of America annual convention in Charlotte in April.

“We have always known that Durham School of the Arts was among the top magnet schools in the nation, but it’s nice to have it so well documented,” said Superintendent Carl E. Harris. “The students, teachers, principals, parents and community partners who make DSA the wonderful place to learn and work that it is deserve our pride and our congratulations!”
