Durham School of the Arts teacher Maya Martin-Bugg has been selected to serve as a National U.S. Department of Education Classroom Fellow during the 2008-09 school year.

Teachers are chosen to serve as Fellows based upon their record of leadership, impact on student achievement and potential for contribution to the field. All Fellows complete a collaborative project to contribute to the field of education at the national level.

Martin-Bugg will continue to serve as a classroom teacher, but also will participate in Fellowship activities outside of the regular teaching day. These activities include communicating with government liaisons and other Department of Education employees, collaborating with other Fellows, completing written assignments, and working on a class project.
