For the third consecutive year, members of the Northern High School science department will present papers at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) national conference, to be held in New Orleans in March 2009. According to teacher Sam Fuerst, the majority of papers submitted for these conferences are rejected. All of Northern’s have been accepted. This year’s paper, to be presented by Fuerst and fellow teacher Joshua Roberts, is titled, “Rainfall and Flash Floods.” Past papers were “Slippery Slope: A Physics Ski Lab on the Slopes or in the Classroom,” presented by Northern teacher Charles Payne at the NSTA conference in Boston in 2008, and “How Beach Sand Connects Coastal Processes to Inland Geology and River Systems,” presented by Fuerst, along with Durham School of the Arts teacher Alex Lemay and DPS Director of 6-12 Science Janet Scott, at the St. Louis conference in 2007. All of the papers were based on lab exercises created by the teachers. Northern’s science department also has presented at a number of state and regional conferences over the last several years.
